"I'm fine. Just take care of her." |

"I will. I'm going to give her some Demerol." |

"I don't keep it here. If someone's that bad, I have to transport them to the hospital. Anyway, with the blood loss it wouldn't be a good idea to completely anesthetize her. The Demerol will put her out long enough for me to dig around in her shoulder. Thank God she's already unconscious or I'd have a fight on my hands. She hates needles." The doctor nodded at the door leading back to the main house. "Maybe you should go out there. I don't need you passing out and getting a concussion when you hit the floor." |

"No thanks; I already have one of those." Chris glanced back at D.J. The sight of her lying so quiet and pale made him wince. He couldn't stand to see her this way. D.J., so full of life, try as she might to deny it, had almost lost her life because of him. Chris looked at the doctor and found the young man studying his face with interest. Cowardly though his actions were, Chris took the doctor's advice and, after one final look in D.J.'s direction, left the room. |

D.J. heard male voices in the distance. She knew both those voices, and they soothed her. She had nothing to fear from either of these men. They would take care of her. |
